For the last 35 months we’ve been writing, traveling the world and tracking every dollar, peso, and pound spent on our journey. Our goal is to help you see how affordable around-the-word travel can be by providing you a monthly summary of our expenses.
What a fantastic month we had in the UK. We spent the first few weeks enjoying time in our housesit and launched our Declutter Clinic course (you’ve already shared with all your cluttered friends, right?). We then said goodbye to England and headed just north to Scotland to walk 152km (96 miles) on the West Highland Way. It turned out to be the most stunning and challenging hiking we’ve done to date.
It was a month where we enjoyed a lot of time outdoors exploring the hills and beauty of the United Kingdom.
August 2013 in Review
From a spending perspective August was much more in line with our expectations. We were able to control our costs by getting back to cooking most of our meals, and thanks to the shortage of pubs our beers out were significantly limited. In addition, we had very little travel with the exception of a train from northern England to Scotland. From there, we let our feet be our transport.
Our food was by far our highest expense at over $950, and given the higher prices and exchange rate we considered this to be doing rather well. We also purchased ~$150 in gear specifically to be ready for the hike (blister packs, water bottles, new fleece for me, guide book, etc).
Also in August we purchased health insurance again. After “self-insuring” for the previous year while we were in cheaper countries we knew we had some big hikes coming up and wanted to be fully covered. We purchased a year long policy from IMG Global for a total of $1,080 and are spreading the costs out over 12 months (thus we now have a monthly additional expense of $90 going forward).
Let’s Get to The Numbers:
- Total spending for August 2013: $1,765
- Daily average for August 2013: $57
- Total spending to date (for entire trip) through August 2013: $74,041
- Overall daily average (1065 days on the road): $69
We are leaving the United Kingdom and heading to mainland Europe. First stops, Brussels, Belgium and Bonn, Germany to visit friends we’ve met during our travels. Then we head to Budapest for a few weeks as we slowly make our way to Turkey. We start our hike of the Lycian Way on October 15th…YIKES.
