For the last 31 months we’ve been traveling the world and tracking every dollar, yuan, and bhat spent on our journey. Our goal is to help you see how affordable around-the-word travel can be by providing you a monthly summary of our expenses.
April was a great month as we continued our artists’ retreat and were joined by our dear photographer friend, Tara Gimmer. We enjoyed a month of exploring more of the area around Guanajuato, heading out to León and Delores Hildago.
We also celebrated our 9th wedding anniversary by hiking (in the dark mind you) up to tops one of los cerros (the big hills)” above the city to watch the sunrise. It was the perfect way to reflect on a great year together and to begin our 10th year of marriage. While up on top we renewed our 1 year marriage contract (listen to the podcast for more details on our annual contract renewal).
While we had some great experiences this month, it was not without drama. I ended up in an altercation with a crazy landlord which included him hurling insults, choking me, and then us having to pack quickly to escape his drunken tirade. Luckily we ended up in a fantastic new casa and have discovered how little we enjoyed the stress of the old place. We are now looking forward to a full month listening to the birds and enjoying our roof-top deck.
April in Review
In spite of having to pay double for accommodations for half the month and getting cheated out of more money by the crazy landlord, we still ended up in good share this month. Our total was just barely over our target of $1,500/month while in Mexico. When you average it with the previous 2 months we are almost spot on the number.
Also, you will notice our food expenses went up this month. We decided to treat ourselves to a couple of “nicer” meals here in Guanajuato. We kept driving by one, La Luz, and thanks to our friend Tara finally went inside. It was outside our normal budget but we loved splurging on a great Italian meal with accompanying margarita martinis (dangerous). We love when we can splurge and have such an enjoyable experience.
Let’s Get to The Numbers:
- Total spending for April 2013: $1,537
- Daily average for April 2013: $51.22
- Total spending to date (for entire trip) through April 2013: $62,228
- Overall daily average (942 days on the road): $66.06
In April we also firmed up our plans for our next destination. We’re heading back to Europe in June. We’ll be spending a few weeks with friends in Belgium and Germany before heading over to the UK to hike Hadrian’s Wall. This is a hike we’ve wanted to do for a couple years and will be a great warm up for our 509km hike of the Lycian Way in October. In July we’ll be heading to northern England to settle into a housesit for 2 dogs and a cat for the rest of the summer. We’re looking forward to the experiences to come.
