If you have been following our journey then you know that we are a family of four that is working on paying off all of our debt while living our dream of traveling the world. How is this possible? All I can say is with hard work and perseverance. Although I am not sure I find much different than doing this in your home-town.
I recently wrote a post about our average days living here in Merida and if you notice a lot of it doesn’t look or sound much different than what you might do in your average day or week. Although this may seem obvious to some of you, you would be surprised how many people think that our days or life is extremely different than it would be if we lived in the U.S., but it actually isn’t that different.
So then you might ask well, why would you live abroad if it isn’t that different?
Simple answer: This is our dream and it is a bit different.
We are eating tacos, learning about Mayans, climbing pyramids and speaking Spanish. Although most of our days include three meals, kids school, work, and of course those dreaded words….house work, it is different enough, for us. It is our dream.
Many times we think dreams must change our lives 180 degrees or working towards them will turn our homes upside down. I think we would be surprised how many businesses or dreams start at kitchen tables, bars, or open mics. Everyday people are living and reaching for their dream. These are the stories I love hearing about and inspire us to keep moving forward.
So that is what we are doing here in Merida, Mexico. We are eating, learning, working, and living in Mexico.
As far as our money goes…the saving part right! I am happy to announce that we have paid off all of our credit cards and are starting on the student loans!!!
Yes!! We are paying off student loans. We are so excited to get these out of our hair and I won’t miss them when they are gone. I don’t know why we thought that having them was normal or something that was considered “good” debt.
What is good debt? How does ‘good‘ and ‘debt‘ get put into the same sentence. We are convinced that there is NO good debt. We hope to never need or want a credit score again and hopefully we have a zero credit score. You know you can still buy a house with a zero credit score and why should we have car loans? Why does paying more for something make sense?
Although we have paid off our credit cards I am thinking that we need a travel emergency fund. We have our 1000.00 in place however we don’t have a travel fund. Since we are traveling and may need to purchase airplane or bus tickets I think we might want to put this in place.
If you are also working towards your dream you might also want to set up a “dream” fund. The idea is to not feel like you have to use a credit card or another evil to complete a project. You want to use cash. You want to be self-sufficient.
Here’s to creating the life you want!
